ABSTRACT

Messenger RNAmRNAmedicine was urgently approved in 2020 as a vaccine for COVID-19 . However, current mRNA therapeutics are not fully established, with challenges remaining in translation efficiency and drug delivery system. Therefore, further research is needed to adapt mRNA therapeutics to other diseases. Furthermore, the preparation of mRNA drugs is time-consuming and costly because of the biological methods used. Our laboratory has been working on chemical methods to solve these issues. In this paper, we introduce chemical modifications and novel capping reactions as a method to improve the translation efficiency of mRNA and the introduction of disulfide modification to oligonucleotide therapeutics as an effort on the drug delivery system.Copyright © 2023, Japan Society of Drug Delivery System. ABSTRACT

The exclusion of women from the labour market continues to be one of the leading causes of poverty within the base of pyramid (BOP) labour market. Using Kabeer's women empowerment framework, this research aggregates some support that direct selling may be a pathway to increase the inclusion of women within the BOP labour market and alleviate poverty;the complexities presented by the COVID-19 pandemic provide a unique context to test this proposition. Drawing on the social constructivist approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with women engaged in direct selling in the BOP market in a Middle Eastern country. The study revealed four key themes throughout the participants' narratives of their experience working in direct selling businesses within the context of COVID-19. These themes are agency, resources, achievement, and precarious work. Our study also explored how the pandemic facilitated the female labour force's inclusion within the direct selling business in the BOP labour market. We concluded that engaging in direct selling has promoted the inclusion of women in labour markets;however, direct selling is still not considered a secure employment option, and direct sellers are exposed to poor pay, employment insecurity, and lack of employment benefits.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Due to the rise of depressive symptomatology especially among vulnerable populations such as young adults during the COVID-19 outbreak, a reliable measuring tool is needed. Because of the lack of such studies, the authors decided to validate the 8-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D 8) among Czech university students capturing the beginning of lockdown experience. Statistical analyses: Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted and structural equation modelling with diagonally weighted least squares estimation using lavaan was employed. Different hypotheses about the dimensionality of the CES-D 8 scale were tested. The authors assessed the measurement equivalence of the CES-D 8 scale according to gender using multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. The effect of socio-demographic and COVID-19 issues variables on depression was examined. Results: One dimensional model with correlated errors showed sufficient validity and therefore, the best fit. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis results revealed that the factor structure is invariant across gender. Women and those who reported financial distress and academic stress showed a higher level of depressive symptomatology. On the other hand, relationships proved to have a protective effect. Limitations: The sample came from an online survey, respondents were self-selected. There was a gender imbalance in the sample that cannot be explained by a higher number of women in the Czech university environment. Conclusions: The CES-D 8 proved to be a useful instrument for measuring depressed mood that opens further possibilities for depression research in the university environment and during pandemic situations. ABSTRACT

IntroductionEffective communication of COVID-19 information involves clear messaging to ensure that readers comprehend and can easily apply behavioral recommendations. This study evaluated the readability, understandability, and actionability of public health resources produced by the four provincial governments in Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island). MethodsA total of 400 web-based resources were extracted in June 2022 and evaluated using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, CDC Clear Communication Index, and the Patient and Education Materials Assessment Tool. Descriptive statistics and a comparison of mean scores were conducted across provinces and type of resources (e.g., text, video). ResultsOverall, readability of resources across the region exceeded recommendations, requiring an average Grade 11 reading level. Videos and short form communication resources, including infographics, were the most understandable and actionable. Mean scores across provinces differed significantly on each tool;Newfoundland and Labrador produced materials that were most readable, understandable, and actionable, followed by New Brunswick. DiscussionRecommendations on improving clarity of COVID-19 resources are described. Careful consideration in the development of publicly available resources is necessary in supporting COVID-19 knowledge uptake, while reducing the prevalence of misinformation.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense RNA virus that contains open reading frame 1ab (ORF1ab) to produce 16 nonstructural proteins (nsps). Five stem-loops (SL) are found in the 5' UTR of the RNA that are involved in myriad viral functions and are labeled SL1 through SL5. SL1 is crucial to viral replication. Upon viral infection, nsp1 binds the ribosomal 40S subunit to inhibit all host mRNA translation. Upon SL1 binding to nsp1, viral mRNA can be processed by the ribosome, allowing viral proteins to be produced. In this study, we are examining small DNA oligonucleotides that bind to SL1-mimetic DNA in order to block SL1-nsp1 interactions. We designed a DNA analog of the SL1 hairpin and two small DNA oligonucleotides that are complementary to either the helical stem or the loop region of SL1. The binding of these oligonucleotides to the SL1 hairpin should allow the formation of either an alternate duplex or a triplex structure. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and circular dichroism (CD) techniques were performed in 1 MKCl and 10 mM MgCl2 at two different pH (5.5 and 7.0) to examine structural and thermodynamics of binding. ITC of the two oligonucleotides showed modest binding. Results from DNA binding experiments, thermal denaturation, and CD show the hairpin structure is thermodynamically more favored and mostly remains intact under the conditions examined.Copyright © 2023 The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.

ABSTRACT

Anthropologists and psychologists engaged in cross-cultural research face numerous methodological challenges. These studies aim to identify universal behavioral traits across all populations on Earth, as well as culturally specific features. This article attempts to describe and comprehend the main problems that researchers encounter while carrying out such projects, using specific examples from the author's field practice. The primary example is data from a large-scale cross-cultural project that studied anxious, aggressive, and empathic behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic in 23 countries worldwide. Existing experience in cross-cultural research demonstrates how various terms and concepts transform under the influence of globalization processes. On the one hand, cultural bound-aries become less defined, while on the other hand, the desire for self-identity strengthens. Familiar biological and social constructs such as sex or marital status are modified and require new under-standing and analysis. Thanks to the methods of social anthropology and the anthropological approach to humans as biosocial beings, the data obtained can be interpreted, taking into account the cultural specifics and behavioral norms of each society.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to tackle the problems of translating medical terms from English to Arabic, particularly terms related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It first examines medical terminology in English, considering how such terms are coined or created, and later sheds light on the importance of neologism in medical discourse. Although English maintains itself as the lingua franca of science and medicine, many researchers have examined the importance of translating medical terminology into Arabic and creating new equivalents instead of borrowing foreign words directly into Arabic. Thus, this article aims to first shed light on newly used words that have emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then analyse their most commonly used translations. The data consists of four common words that have been extensively used during the pandemic. The study concluded that the majority of these terminologies are translated using a descriptive method, or Arabicization. ABSTRACT

Open-retrieval question answering systems are generally trained and tested on large datasets in well-established domains. However, low-resource settings such as new and emerging domains would especially benefit from reliable question answering systems. Furthermore, multilingual and cross-lingual resources in emergent domains are scarce, leading to few or no such systems. In this paper, we demonstrate a cross-lingual open-retrieval question answering system for the emergent domain of COVID-19. Our system adopts a corpus of scientific articles to ensure that retrieved documents are reliable. To address the scarcity of cross-lingual training data in emergent domains, we present a method utilizing automatic translation, alignment, and filtering to produce English-to-all datasets. We show that a deep semantic retriever greatly benefits from training on our English-to-all data and significantly outperforms a BM25 baseline in the cross-lingual setting. ABSTRACT

During the devastating early months of the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic in New York, healthcare systems and clinicians dynamically adapted to drastically changing everyday practice despite having little guidance from formal research evidence in the face of a novel virus. Through new, silo-breaking networks of communication, clinical teams transformed and synthesized provisional recommendations, rudimentary published research findings and numerous other sources of knowledge to address the immediate patient care needs they faced during the pandemic surge. These experiences illustrated underlying social processes that are always at play as clinicians integrate information from various sources, including research and published guidelines, with their own tacit knowledge to develop shared yet personal approaches to practice. In this article, we provide a narrative account of personal experience during the COVID-19 surge. We draw on the concept of mindlines as developed by Gabbay and Le May as a conceptual framework for interpreting that experience from the standpoint of how early information from research and guidelines was drawn on and transformed in the course of day-to-day struggle with the crisis in New York City emergency rooms. Finally, briefly referencing the challenges to conventional models of healthcare knowledge creation and translation through research and guideline production posed by COVID-19 crisis, we offer a provisional perspective on current and future developments.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Due to the rapid progression of COVID-19 to severe and critical stages, thousands of patients have required the use of intensive care unit (ICU) treatment, placing an excessive strain on health systems. Immunomodulatory effects of Wharton's Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells (WJ-MSCs) have shown promising results on the treatment of patients with COVID-19. However, the effect of promptly applied cell therapy on ambulatory patient prognosis has not been described. This case report presents the clinical outcome of a multimorbid, steroid-hypersensitive, COVID-19 patient treated with WJ-MSCs transplantation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman with Type 2 diabetes, overweight (82 kg, 168 cm, BMI = 29.053), hypertension (60/190 mmHg) and steroid-hypersensitivity, tested positive for COVID-19 after presenting typical symptoms such as fatigue, chest pain, myalgia, nasal congestion, dysgeusia, anosmia and oxygen saturation (SpO2) 94% - 96%, with normal body temperature (36°C). The patient received pharmacologic treatment but, when symptoms worsened, WJ-MSCs were transplanted to modulate the suspected onset of the cytokine release syndrome. Significant improvement of symptoms and clinical parameters (inflammatory markers and CT score) were observed, and the patient fully recovered within a short period of time. CONCLUSION: The present case report exhibits the favorable outcome of using Wharton's Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells (WJ-MSCs) as an ambulatory and adjuvant therapy for COVID-19. Prompt WJ-MSCs infusion can be a safe ambulatory adjuvant therapy in COVID-19 infection care, preventing disease progression to critical stages and avoiding hospital overcrowding.

Introduction: The ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth is the most comprehensive national assessment of physical activity and related behaviors, characteristics, and opportunities for children and youth. The 2022 Report Card assigned grades based on data gathered during the COVID-19 pandemic to reflect this extraordinary time-period in Canada. Further, while not graded, efforts were made to summarize key findings for early years children and those identifying as: having a disability, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, newcomers to Canada, racialized, or girls. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the 2022 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth. Methods: The best available physical activity data captured during the whole COVID-19 pandemic was synthesized across 14 different indicators in four categories. The 2022 Report Card Research Committee assigned letter grades (i.e., A-F) based on expert consensus of the evidence. Synthesis: Grades were assigned for: Daily Behaviors (Overall Physical Activity: D; Active Play: D-; Active Transportation: C-; Organized Sport: C+; Physical Education: Incomplete [INC]; Sedentary Behaviors: F; Sleep: B; 24-Hour Movement Behaviors: F), Individual Characteristics (Physical Literacy: INC; Physical Fitness: INC), Spaces and Places (Household: C, School: B-, Community and Environment: B), and Strategies and Investments (Government: B-). Compared to the 2020 Report Card, the COVID-19 specific grades increased for Active Play and Active Transportation; and decreased for Overall Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviors, Organized Sport, and Community and Environment. There were many data gaps for equity-deserving groups. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the grade for Overall Physical Activity decreased from a D+ (2020) to a D, coinciding with decreases in grades reflecting fewer opportunities for sport and community/facility-based activities as well as higher levels of sedentary behaviors. Fortunately, improvements in Active Transportation and Active Play during COVID-19 prevented a worse shift in children's health behaviors. Efforts are needed to improve physical activity for children and youth during and post-pandemic, with a greater emphasis on equity-deserving groups.

ABSTRACT

Introduction Dysphagia is one of the general symptoms encountered in clinical practice. The impact of dysphagia can be devastating to a patient's physical condition and quality of life (QOL). To evaluate the QOL of patients with dysphagia there are numerous self-reported questionnaires. The most commonly used one such questionnaire is the Swallowing Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (SWAL-QOL). However, it is not concise and is incomplete as it does not address all the aspects of dysphagia. To overcome this, the Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) was developed. It focuses on the functional and emotional aspects in addition to the physical aspects of dysphagia. Objective To develop a Tamil version of the DHI (DHI-T) and assess its reliability, cultural adaptability and validity. Materials and method This cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2021 to December 2022 on 140 participants consisting of 70 dysphagia patients and 70 healthy individuals. Results The reliability and validity of the DHI-T were good with a high correlation between DHI-T and self-perceived severity scales of dysphagia. The mean total score in the Dysphagia group was 59.77 with the mean physical, functional and emotional scores being 23.86, 17.46 and 18.46 respectively. These scores were less compared to the Healthy group (p-value <0.01). Conclusion This study shows that DHI-T can be used as a reliable and valid tool to grade and study the different domains of dysphagia in our study population. Among the various causes of dysphagia studied in our population, it was noted that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related dysphagia patients had higher mean score in the emotional domain. To the best of our knowledge, the DHI scores for COVID-19-related dysphagia have not been done before. As the application of DHI in routine clinical practice and research is increasing, we believe this DHI-T can be of aid to Tamil-speaking patients.

ABSTRACT

Digital contact tracing has been claimed as imperative to controlling the spread of COVID19. However, the state-by-state approach in the United States led to divergences in contact tracing. This study analyzed contact-tracing apps as "boundary objects" through which each state worked toward the governance of the pandemic without having a formal consensus. Through media coverage and walkthrough analyses of three digital contacttracing apps in Alabama, California, and New York, we closely investigated both convergences and divergences of the apps. In the process, we located the implications of Google/Apple's Bluetooth-based exposure notification system for digital contact tracing within and beyond state boundaries. Our findings suggest that the development of apps shared the notion of an ideal contact-tracing method-exposure notification-while each state was also situated in their local experiences of the pandemic as reflected in distinct app features. We further discuss the implications of techno-solutionist standardization of such digital contact-tracing apps.

ABSTRACT

The past years of COVID-19 have attracted researchers to carry out benchmark work in face mask detection. However, the existing work does not focus on the problem of reconstructing the face area behind the mask and completing the face that can be used for face recognition. In order to address this problem, in this work we have proposed a spatial attention module-based conditional generative adversarial network method that can generate plausible images of faces without masks by removing the face masks from the face region. The method proposed in this work utilizes a self-created dataset consisting of faces with three types of face masks for training and testing purposes. With the proposed method, an SSIM value of 0.91231 which is 3.89% higher and a PSNR value of 30.9879 which is 3.17% higher has been obtained as compared to the vanilla C-GAN method.

ABSTRACT

In times of the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of online platforms for teaching purposes accelerated, and remote learning and teaching gained ground in the field of Translation & Interpreting Studies (TIS). In this paper, we discuss the curriculum design of JurDist, a master's course in legal translation, which has been offered as an online course for the language combinations Norwegian - English/French/German/Spanish since 2013. We describe, in detail, today's curriculum and discuss modifications to the teaching, implemented in the spring semester of 2021. The modifications aim at improving the students' performance in accordance with current research in translation theory (i.e., translation competence development) and in line with current approaches to learning and teaching (e.g., taxonomies describing different levels and kinds of understanding). Consequently, the curriculum design and the modified approach to teaching aim at enhancing the students' professional skills in the field of legal translation. Although this teaching approach is applicable to both online teaching and the physical classroom, we describe its implementation in an online teaching environment only. Online teaching in all its facets has come to stay, also within TIS. We contribute to this development with our experience in teaching specialized translation online since 2013, which predates the recent pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This article addresses the role of language and quality translation in museum communication. The production of texts in museums is increasingly demanding as institutions are asked to rethink audience-oriented actions in co-design and diversity. This study is based on data provided by audio guides made available online to engage the public and provide free educational materials, something especially relevant in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis indicates that quality materials are crucial in understanding the exhibits and that accessibility may profit from multilingualism. We argue that tailoring texts can improve translation quality and provide more stimulating materials to diverse audiences.

ABSTRACT

This article sets out to chart various aspects of the relationship between COVID-19 fake news and the process of translation by analyzing how several English-language deceptive reports were rendered into Romanian. In Romania, the emergence of the novel coronavirus coincided with a surge of interest in the fake news phenomenon among experts, the wider public, and most notably, the country's authorities, which blocked fake news websites temporarily in an effort to combat the infodemic. However, neither the Decree which instituted this measure nor the existing research into the phenomenon distinguishes between original and translated reports, which led to criticism regarding the extent to which the intent to disinform is provable in the case of such articles. In the present essay, the author argues, through case studies, that the higher the level of human input and localization, the higher the chances that a translated fake news report can successfully be proven to be part of a disinformation agenda.

ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the professional situation that medical translators and interpreters had to face during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. Due to the state of alarm declared on 16th March 2020, many people who were born abroad but who were in that moment living, working or in some cases sightseeing in Spain, could not return to their respective countries. As time passed by, the situation got worse, and thus there were thousands of foreign people who got the coronavirus in Spain, many of whom had to be admitted to hospitals. It is in situations like these when medical translators and interpreters are useful due to the logical nervousness of the situation. Even people who speak Spanish feel themselves much more protected and informed if an English/Spanish or French/Spanish specialist can explain to them how their health situation is doing. It was during this period when the Spanish Ministry of Health and many other professional organizations asked for the collaboration of medical translators and interpreters who spoke English, French, German and even Chinese. The following pages contain a glossary with English/French/Spanish terminology regarding all the coronavirus terms that were mainly used within translation and interpreting scenarios, some lecturing proposals from a Translation and Interpreting Teaching-Learning point of view and the description of the deontology for language mediators in situations of despair and uneasiness such as the COVID-19 pandemic. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

In the COVID-19 crisis, multilingual and multimodal translation services, provided by both professional translators and volunteer communities, have greatly facilitated the communication between different parties. This chapter gives an overview of how diverse agents have engaged in this large-scale translation endeavor and draws attention to the importance of translation planning in crisis contexts. It not only discusses the operations of volunteer translators, highlighting their contribution in providing language assistance in crisis situations, but also analyzes the significant role played by government-sponsored institutions in mobilizing language professionals and organizing translation projects, such as Language Service Group Against COVID-19 and China International Publishing Group. Moreover, this chapter focuses on the relevance of translation to waixuan (often translated as international publicity) in this crisis situation and investigates how translation is strategically adopted by the government as a medium of communicating the Chinese experience of fighting COVID-19. After analyzing all these disparate efforts, it argues for the significance of translation in overcoming language barriers in crisis contexts and concludes with suggestions on how to enhance translation planning for health emergencies. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2021.
